What is a hallmark?

I am genuinely proud to be registered with The Goldsmiths' Company Assay Office London;  the oldest assay office in the UK.

The hallmark is an assurance that the quality of the metal used to make your jewellery has met the quality standard and has been certified by an independent assay office. It is a guarantee that it has been made from a precious metal and that it has not been plated.

Under UK law all sterling silver jewellery over 7.78g and all gold jewellery over 1g sold within the UK must be hallmarked. However, this is no reflection on the quality or value of smaller pieces that have not been hallmarked, it just means that the additional time and cost of hallmarking is not viable for all pieces.
